Grounding

Coming back into your body when everything races.

When anxiety rises or you feel "stuck in your head", grounding brings you back to here, now, into your body. It’s one of the simplest and most powerful gestures of spiritual hygiene.

The ritual, step by step

  1. Feet flat, feel the floor holding you up.
  2. Roots: imagine them growing from your feet down to the centre of the earth.
  3. Breathe slowly: in for 4, out for 6.
  4. 5-4-3-2-1: name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you touch, 2 you smell, 1 you taste.

When to do it

During anxiety, overwhelm, when you feel disconnected or your mind won’t stop spinning.

Why it works

Anxiety lives in anticipation — the future, the "what ifs". The body, though, is always in the present. Bringing your attention into your feet, your breath, your five senses literally short-circuits the spiral of a racing mind.

One small tip

If you can, do it barefoot on the floor — or outside, on grass or earth. Real physical contact noticeably amplifies the grounding effect.
