The Merkaba is two interlocked tetrahedra forming a three-dimensional star — one pointing up, one pointing down. In ancient tradition it is the symbol of the light body: the energetic vehicle that holds spirit and matter in perfect balance.
The word Merkaba is ancient Egyptian: Mer (light), Ka (spirit/soul), Ba (body). Together they describe a rotating field of light that surrounds the physical form. The concept appears in Kabbalistic texts, in the Book of Ezekiel’s vision of the celestial chariot, and across mystery traditions from Egypt to Tibet. The modern revival of Merkaba meditation owes much to the work of Drunvalo Melchizedek, who formalised the 17-breath activation practice in the late 20th century.
The Merkaba is a stella octangula — two tetrahedra (the simplest of the five Platonic Solids) locked together. One tetrahedron points upward toward the heavens, carrying the masculine/fire principle. One points downward toward the earth, carrying the feminine/water principle. Each is the mirror-opposite of the other, yet they share the same centre. In visualisation and meditation, the two counter-rotate: one spinning clockwise, one counter-clockwise, generating a toroidal energy field around the body.
The Merkaba contains the Star of David in its 2D projection — that same ancient symbol of “as above, so below.” It sits naturally within the Flower of Life, emerging from the intersections of its circles.
Across traditions, the Merkaba represents the idea that your physical existence and your spiritual nature are not in conflict — they are one system, turning together. The two tetrahedra do not cancel each other out; they create something greater: a stable, radiant, coherent whole. That is the central teaching this symbol carries.
In energy work, the Merkaba is associated with the heart chakra as the meeting point of above and below, and with the crown chakra as the destination of the ascending energy. It is used as a protection symbol and as a meditation anchor for reconnecting with one’s energetic wholeness.

The simplest practice is visualisation: close your eyes, breathe slowly, and imagine a star tetrahedron forming around your body — its tip above your head, its base below your feet. Feel both the upward and the downward pull, equally. Notice what settles.
It is also a powerful journalling anchor: when you feel torn between your spiritual aspirations and your everyday reality, draw the two interlocked triangles on paper. Ask yourself: which triangle am I neglecting? What would it feel like for both to spin freely?
As jewellery or an object on your altar, the Merkaba is traditionally used for protection and centring — a reminder that you are always more than one thing, and that your wholeness includes all of it.
