How to draw a rune

No elaborate ritual needed — runes love simplicity and honesty. Here are the three gentle moments of a draw.

Ask an open question. Instead of "yes or no?", ask "what would help me here?" or "what do I need to see?". Take a breath and hold it lightly in mind.
Draw one rune — hand in the bag, eyes closed — or cast three for a past · present · unfolding. Notice whether it comes up upright or reversed (some read the same either way).
Interpret without forcing it. Read the rune's message, then ask yourself: what does this stir in me, right now? The true reading is the one that genuinely speaks to you, not the most dramatic one.

Myth vs reality

The mythRunes predict a fixed future: they tell you what will "inevitably" happen.
The realityA rune is a symbolic mirror. It sheds light on the situation and on your own feelings to help you choose — the future stays in your hands.
The mythA "negative" rune (Hagalaz, Nauthiz…) foretells misfortune.
The realityNo rune is good or bad. The rougher ones speak of patience, fertile upheaval, passage — never of a doom set in stone.
The mythYou have to "believe" very hard for it to work.
The realityYou can meet them out of curiosity, as a support for reflection. What matters is the honesty with which you listen to yourself.
Keep in mind: a rune never replaces your decision. It offers you an angle, an image, a question — you're the one holding the thread of your story.

Frequently asked

How many runes are there?

The Elder Futhark has 24 runes, in three groups of eight (the "aettir"). Each rune is both a letter and a symbol that carries meaning.

How do you read runes?

You draw one or more and read their meaning, upright or reversed. Like tarot, it's a tool for reflection — the rune sheds light, it doesn't fix the future.

Do all runes have a reversed position?

No: some are symmetrical (Gebo, Isa, Sowilo, Dagaz…) and read the same either way.

Do I have to believe?

No — you can approach runes as a tool for reflection and a cultural curiosity.
