What does Death mean in tarot?

Death upright represents Endings, transformation, transition. It is one of the 22 Major Arcana cards, marking a significant theme in your current path. When this card appears, it invites you to pay attention to what is unfolding — something meaningful is in motion.

Upright & Reversed Meanings

✦ Upright

Death is transformation — endings that make way for rebirth. Upright, it rarely means literal death; it means a chapter is closing so a truer one can begin. Let what is finished go. The clearing is painful but necessary, and something new is already on its way.

↓ Reversed

Reversed, it points to resistance to change — clinging to what’s already over, fear of letting go, or a transition that’s stalled. It gently insists: the only way through is to release. What are you holding that has already ended?

The origin & symbolism of Death

✦ Where this card comes from

Card XIII shows a skeletal knight in black armour on a white horse, carrying a banner with the white five-petalled rose of life. Kings fall and children and clergy kneel — death comes to every rank alike — while the sun rises between two pillars behind him. It is endings, rebirth and transformation; its sign is Scorpio.

Reading the picture: the symbols in Death

✦ What the Rider–Waite card shows

A skeleton clad in black armour rides slowly forward on a pale white horse, carrying a black flag marked with a white five-petalled rose, the mystic rose that stands for purity and the promise of new life beyond endings. Before the rider a king lies fallen, while a child, a young woman and a bishop face him with pleading or accepting gestures, showing that change comes to everyone regardless of rank. In the distance two towers frame a rising sun on the horizon, a hopeful sign that out of every ending a new dawn breaks. A still river winds through the scene. Far from being grim, the card uses these images to speak of transformation, release, the close of one chapter and the inevitable renewal that follows letting the old fall away.

Death for each zodiac sign

Death is transformation — the ending that clears the way for what is truly meant to grow. Nothing here is literal; each sign meets the change differently. Here is Death for all twelve signs.

♈   Death for Aries

FireMarsCardinalShadow · Impatience

Death asks fast-moving Aries to let something end fully before you sprint to the next beginning. This card is transformation, not just another start. Your task is to honour the ending, to let the old self fall away completely so the new one can rise clean.

♉   Death for Taurus

EarthVenusFixedShadow · Stubbornness

Death is Taurus's hardest lesson — you cling to the familiar, and this card demands you release it. The ending feels like losing solid ground. But the change is not taking your security; it is transforming it into something you have outgrown the need to hold.

♊   Death for Gemini

AirMercuryMutableShadow · Restlessness

Death asks flighty Gemini to let a chapter genuinely close, not just get distracted from it. This card is transformation you cannot chat your way around. Something must end for real. Grieve it, then let the new version of your life begin — fully, not halfway.

♋   Death for Cancer

WaterMoonCardinalShadow · Moodiness

Death touches tender Cancer where it hurts — the ending of what you hold dear. This card asks you to release with love rather than cling in fear. What transforms now was never truly lost; it changes form. Let the tide take it out so a new tide can return.

♌   Death for Leo

FireSunFixedShadow · Pride

Death asks Leo to let an identity die — a role, an image, a way of being seen that has run its course. This card is ego transformation, and it stings. But what rises after is more truly you, no longer performing a self you have already outgrown.

♍   Death for Virgo

EarthMercuryMutableShadow · Self-criticism

Death asks orderly Virgo to let a structure collapse that you would rather repair. This card says some things cannot be fixed, only ended and rebuilt. Your gift for improvement meets its limit here — the wisest act is to let go and begin the transformation clean.

♎   Death for Libra

AirVenusCardinalShadow · Indecision

Death asks harmony-seeking Libra to end something rather than keep patching it. This card says a relationship or balance has run its course, and clinging only delays the peace. Release it kindly; real harmony sometimes requires a clean ending, not another compromise.

♏   Death for Scorpio

WaterPlutoFixedShadow · Control

Death is Scorpio's own card — you know transformation intimately, having died and been reborn before. This ending does not frighten you; it feels like truth. The card affirms your power to shed the old completely. Trust the descent; you always rise changed and stronger.

♐   Death for Sagittarius

FireJupiterMutableShadow · Excess

Death frees roaming Sagittarius from a chapter that has closed, even one you enjoyed. This card is transformation, not the loss of adventure. Let the old journey end fully so a truer one can begin — the road ahead needs you unburdened by the one behind.

♑   Death for Capricorn

EarthSaturnCardinalShadow · Rigidity

Death asks enduring Capricorn to release something you built, or a version of the goal you have outgrown. This card says not every structure is meant to last; some must end to make room. The transformation is not failure — it clears ground for what deserves your climb.

♒   Death for Aquarius

AirUranusFixedShadow · Detachment

Death suits forward-facing Aquarius — you welcome the end of the outdated. This card asks you to let an old form of your own life die as readily as you would an old system. Personal transformation, not just societal; release the past self and let the next emerge.

♓   Death for Pisces

WaterNeptuneMutableShadow · Escapism

Death meets Pisces gently — you already sense that endings are transitions, not stops. This card asks you to release what is dissolving without grasping. What ends now flows into what comes next. Trust the transformation; your soul knows that nothing truly disappears.
