✦ Upright

The Four of Swords is rest and recovery. Upright, it calls for retreat — a pause to heal the mind after struggle. Step back, be still, and let yourself recuperate; the battle can wait.

↓ Reversed

Reversed, it signals restlessness, burnout, or resisting the rest you badly need — or, gently, the time to wake and re-engage.

✦ Where this card comes from

A knight lies in stone repose atop a tomb, three swords on the wall and one beneath him — sanctuary and stillness after the fight.

Reading the picture: the symbols in Four of Swords

✦ What the Rider–Waite card shows

A knight lies stretched out upon a tomb inside a quiet chapel, hands pressed together in prayer, eyes closed in stillness rather than death, his body carved in pale stone. Three swords hang on the wall above him, pointing downward, while a fourth lies flat along the side of the tomb beneath him. The downward swords are set aside and at rest, not raised in conflict. As Air, this is the mind deliberately stilled, a pause for recovery after struggle. A stained-glass window glows with gentle colour, showing a figure offering blessing or healing. The whole scene reads as retreat, meditation and convalescence: stepping back from mental battle to rest, recover strength and restore inner peace before re-entering the world.
