What does The Devil mean in tarot?

The Devil upright represents Addiction, materialism, playfulness. It is one of the 22 Major Arcana cards, marking a significant theme in your current path. When this card appears, it invites you to pay attention to what is unfolding — something meaningful is in motion.

Upright & Reversed Meanings

✦ Upright

The Devil is attachment, shadow and the chains we forget we can remove. Upright, it shows where you feel trapped — by addiction, fear, a toxic pattern or material obsession. Its gift is awareness: see the cage clearly, and notice the chains are looser than they look.

↓ Reversed

Reversed, it’s the beginning of liberation — breaking free, reclaiming your power, confronting a shadow you’ve avoided. It says the door is opening and you’re ready to release what has been holding you down.

The origin & symbolism of The Devil

✦ Where this card comes from

Card XV shows a horned, half-goat Baphomet looming over a chained man and woman — yet their chains are loose enough to slip off. An inverted pentagram sits above. It deliberately mirrors The Lovers, but bound to the material instead of blessed by the divine. It is bondage, temptation and the shadow self; its sign is Capricorn.

Reading the picture: the symbols in The Devil

✦ What the Rider–Waite card shows

A great horned figure with bat wings, the legs of a goat and the talons of a bird crouches on a black pedestal, an inverted star glowing on his brow to show spirit turned upside down by base desire. He raises one hand in a mocking gesture and holds a flaming torch downward in the other, pointing toward destruction rather than light. Below him a naked man and woman stand chained loosely by the neck to his perch, yet the chains are slack enough to lift off, revealing that their bondage is chosen and can be left behind. Small horns and tails make the couple resemble their captor. The all-black background presses in with heaviness and fear. Everything here speaks of temptation, addiction, materialism and the self-made traps we can choose to release.

The Devil for each zodiac sign

The Devil is what binds us — attachment, temptation, and the shadow we would rather not name. The chains are looser than they look; each sign is bound differently. Here is the Devil for all twelve signs.

♈   The Devil for Aries

FireMarsCardinalShadow · Impatience

The Devil binds Aries through impulse — the craving to act on every urge, to chase the hit of the new. Your chain is compulsion mistaken for freedom. This card asks you to see where your appetite runs you, and to notice the choice you still, always, have.

♉   The Devil for Taurus

EarthVenusFixedShadow · Stubbornness

The Devil tempts Taurus through the senses — comfort, pleasure and possession turned into a cage. Your chain is the thing you cannot imagine giving up. This card asks whether you own your comforts or they own you, and reminds you the lock was never truly closed.

♊   The Devil for Gemini

AirMercuryMutableShadow · Restlessness

The Devil binds Gemini through distraction — endless stimulation that keeps you from the deeper thing. Your chain is the scroll, the noise, the escape into the next shiny input. This card asks you to notice the avoidance beneath the busyness, and to name what you are not facing.

♋   The Devil for Cancer

WaterMoonCardinalShadow · Moodiness

The Devil binds Cancer through emotional attachment — clinging to people or the past from fear of loss. Your chain is a bond that has curdled into dependence. This card asks you, tenderly, to see where love has become a cage, and to loosen your grip without closing your heart.

♌   The Devil for Leo

FireSunFixedShadow · Pride

The Devil tempts Leo through ego and image — the need to be admired hardening into a trap. Your chain is the applause you think you cannot live without. This card asks you to find your worth beneath the performance, where no audience is needed to feel whole.

♍   The Devil for Virgo

EarthMercuryMutableShadow · Self-criticism

The Devil binds Virgo through control and criticism — the compulsion to perfect, the harsh inner voice you obey like law. Your chain is never enough. This card asks you to see that the taskmaster is one you can dismiss, and that freedom begins with self-forgiveness.

♎   The Devil for Libra

AirVenusCardinalShadow · Indecision

The Devil binds Libra through people-pleasing — the fear of disapproval that keeps you in unbalanced bonds. Your chain is the yes you keep saying to avoid conflict. This card asks you to see where harmony has become self-betrayal, and to reclaim the no.

♏   The Devil for Scorpio

WaterPlutoFixedShadow · Control

The Devil is Scorpionic territory — obsession, desire, the intoxicating depths. You know these chains intimately. This card is not a warning to fear your intensity but an invitation to master it: to see where passion has become bondage, and to choose it freely rather than compulsively.

♐   The Devil for Sagittarius

FireJupiterMutableShadow · Excess

The Devil binds free Sagittarius in an unexpected way — through excess and the belief that more is always freedom. Your chain is escape itself, the flight that never lands. This card asks whether your restlessness is liberty or a leash, and where truth might mean staying.

♑   The Devil for Capricorn

EarthSaturnCardinalShadow · Rigidity

The Devil is Capricorn's own ruler, Saturn's darker face — ambition turned to bondage, worth measured only in status and gain. Your chain is the climb you cannot stop, even when it costs your life. This card asks what you are truly working for, and who set the price.

♒   The Devil for Aquarius

AirUranusFixedShadow · Detachment

The Devil binds detached Aquarius through fixed ideas — an ideology or identity you cling to as tightly as any addict. Your chain is being right, standing apart. This card asks you to notice where your independence has become its own dogma, and to loosen even that.

♓   The Devil for Pisces

WaterNeptuneMutableShadow · Escapism

The Devil binds Pisces through escapism — fantasy, numbing, the dissolve that lets you avoid hard reality. Your chain is the exit you take when life gets heavy. This card asks you, gently, to stay present with what hurts, where your real power and healing actually live.
