What does The Devil mean in tarot?

The Devil upright represents Addiction, materialism, playfulness. It is one of the 22 Major Arcana cards, marking a significant theme in your current path. When this card appears, it invites you to pay attention to what is unfolding — something meaningful is in motion.

Upright & Reversed Meanings

✦ Upright

The Devil is attachment, shadow and the chains we forget we can remove. Upright, it shows where you feel trapped — by addiction, fear, a toxic pattern or material obsession. Its gift is awareness: see the cage clearly, and notice the chains are looser than they look.

↓ Reversed

Reversed, it’s the beginning of liberation — breaking free, reclaiming your power, confronting a shadow you’ve avoided. It says the door is opening and you’re ready to release what has been holding you down.

The origin & symbolism of The Devil

✦ Where this card comes from

Card XV shows a horned, half-goat Baphomet looming over a chained man and woman — yet their chains are loose enough to slip off. An inverted pentagram sits above. It deliberately mirrors The Lovers, but bound to the material instead of blessed by the divine. It is bondage, temptation and the shadow self; its sign is Capricorn.

Reading the picture: the symbols in The Devil

✦ What the Rider–Waite card shows

A great horned figure with bat wings, the legs of a goat and the talons of a bird crouches on a black pedestal, an inverted star glowing on his brow to show spirit turned upside down by base desire. He raises one hand in a mocking gesture and holds a flaming torch downward in the other, pointing toward destruction rather than light. Below him a naked man and woman stand chained loosely by the neck to his perch, yet the chains are slack enough to lift off, revealing that their bondage is chosen and can be left behind. Small horns and tails make the couple resemble their captor. The all-black background presses in with heaviness and fear. Everything here speaks of temptation, addiction, materialism and the self-made traps we can choose to release.
