The Wheel of the Year

The year turns in eight soft seasons. Here's what each one whispers — and a tiny, tender ritual to meet it, held gently by Wooly. 🐑

Yule Imbolc Ostara Beltane Litha Lughn. Mabon Samhain 🐑

The Wheel of the Year is a gentle old way of following the seasons — eight moments that mark the turning of light and dark, growth and rest. It comes from earth-based and Celtic traditions, but you don't have to be anything or believe anything to use it.

Think of it as eight soft check-ins with nature and with yourself across the year — little invitations to slow down, notice the season, and do one small tender thing. That's all. 🌙

The eight seasons

🕯️

Samhain

≈ 31 October

The year's soft goodbye. A time to honour what has passed, remember those you love, and let yourself rest.

Gentle ritual: light a candle for someone or something you miss.

❄️

Yule

≈ 21 December

The longest night, and the light returning. Hope in the dark, deep rest, one quiet wish.

Gentle ritual: in the dark, light one small light and name a hope.

🌱

Imbolc

≈ 1 February

The first stirring under the frost. Tiny beginnings, fresh air, a gentle clearing-out.

Gentle ritual: tidy one small space, and plant a seed or an intention.

🌸

Ostara

≈ 20 March

The spring equinox — day and night in balance. Renewal, growth, a fresh start.

Gentle ritual: open a window and write down what you'd like to grow.

🔥

Beltane

≈ 1 May

Bloom and warmth. Joy, passion, connection — life at full colour.

Gentle ritual: do one thing today that makes you feel truly alive.

☀️

Litha

≈ 21 June

The summer solstice — the height of light. Fullness, energy, gratitude, celebration.

Gentle ritual: stand in the sun a moment and give thanks for it.

🌾

Lughnasadh

≈ 1 August

The first harvest. What you've tended is ripening. Effort quietly rewarded.

Gentle ritual: name one thing you've grown in yourself this year.

🍂

Mabon

≈ 22 September

The autumn equinox — balance again, and thanks. Gratitude, slowing down, letting go.

Gentle ritual: give thanks for the year, and release one thing that's done.

How to use the Wheel of the Year

You don't need to celebrate all eight, or do anything elaborate. Pick the season you're in, read what it whispers, and do the one small ritual — or just pause and feel the turning. The point isn't performance; it's gently remembering that you move with the year, not against it.

Some people mark each sabbat with a candle, a walk, a little tidy or a written intention. Wooly's only rule is softness: whatever you do, let it feel like rest, not a task. 🐑
