Guna Milan, or Ashtakoota, is the traditional Vedic method of matching two charts for marriage. It compares eight qualities — the koota — between the bride's and groom's Moon nakshatras and awards points for each, out of 36.
As a rough guide: 18 and above is traditionally read as acceptable, 24 to 32 as a strong match, and above 32 as rare. Below 18 is where astrologers usually look more closely rather than simply declaring a mismatch.
A low score is a prompt to look further, not a refusal. Guna Milan weighs only the Moon nakshatras; a full reading also considers Mangal dosha, the 7th house, the position of Venus and Jupiter, and the timing of the marriage itself.
No, and traditional astrologers never treat it as such. It is a first filter. Two people with 30 gunas can be poorly matched in life, and two with 16 can be happy — the score describes one layer of a chart, not a relationship.
