The phases of
the moon

Eight phases, one gentle rhythm. Their meaning, their energy, and what people like to do — nothing required.

In about 29.5 days, the moon moves from total darkness (new moon) to full light (full moon), then back. Many use this cycle as a gentle rhythm: setting intentions as the light grows, releasing and resting as it wanes. Here are the eight phases and what they’re associated with.

The 8 phases

🌑 New Moon

The time of new beginnings and intentions.

🌒 Waxing Crescent

The momentum of first steps.

🌓 First Quarter

The time of decision and action.

🌔 Waxing Gibbous

The time to refine and persevere.

🌕 Full Moon

The time of culmination and release.

🌖 Waning Gibbous

The time of reflection and sharing.

🌗 Last Quarter

The time of release and forgiveness.

🌘 Waning Crescent

The time of rest and introspection.

Waxing vs waning

When the light grows (new to full), the energy turns outward: begin, build, act. When it wanes (full to new), it turns inward: release, clear, rest.

How to follow the moon day to day

No need to overhaul anything: just glance at the current phase and match your energy to it. At the new moon, take five minutes to write what you’d like to see grow; during the waxing phase, move step by step; at the full moon, celebrate and release what weighs you down; during the waning phase, lighten, tidy and rest. It’s less a strict calendar than a breath: you push, then you let go.

And if you miss a phase? It doesn’t matter. The moon comes back every 29.5 days — there’s always a next cycle to begin again, gently.
