What are annual profections?

Annual profections are one of the simplest and most beloved timing techniques in traditional astrology. The idea is beautiful: every year of your life, the focus moves one house forward around your chart. At age 0 you're in your 1st house (your rising sign); at 1, the 2nd house; and so on — looping back to the 1st every 12 years (so ages 0, 12, 24, 36… all return to the 1st house).

The sign sitting on your activated house becomes the sign of the year, and its ruling planet becomes your Lord of the Year — the planet whose themes colour the next twelve months, from one birthday to the next.

How to use it

Notice which area of life is highlighted (your house topic) and get curious about your Lord of the Year — where it sits in your birth chart often shows where the year's story unfolds. Profection years that activate the 1st, 10th or 7th house tend to be especially noticeable. Pair this with the cosmic calendar to feel the year's bigger rhythms too.

Questions

What is the Lord of the Year?

It's the planet that rules the sign on your activated (profected) house this year. Its themes — and where it sits in your birth chart — tend to set the tone for the twelve months from birthday to birthday.

Which birthday does the year start on?

Your profection year runs from one birthday to the next, so it changes each year on your birthday.

Do I need my exact birth time?

You only need your rising sign for profections. If you don't know it, calculate your free birth chart first — your exact birth time sets your ascendant.
