If planets are the “what” and signs are the “how”, the houses are the where — the 12 areas of life where your chart's energy plays out.
Your birth chart is a circle split into 12 slices — the houses, each governing a different area of life (money, love, career, home…). A planet sitting in a house shows where that planet's energy is most active for you.
Crucially, the houses are set by your exact birth time and place — which is why two people born the same day can have very different charts. (No birth time? You can still read signs and planets, just not houses precisely.)
Who you are, your “vibe”, your body and how you come across. The cusp of this house is your rising sign (Ascendant) — the mask the world meets first.
Your personal income, what you own, and what you truly value. This is the classic “money house” — your earning power and your relationship with security.
How you think, speak and learn; short trips, neighbours and brothers/sisters. The everyday mind.
Your home, parents, ancestry and emotional foundations — where you come from and what makes you feel safe.
Self-expression, fun, dating and flirtation, children and creative projects — the house of joy.

Your public role, ambition and how the world sees your achievements. The cusp is the Midheaven (MC) — your calling.

💰 “Where's my money?” — look to your 2nd house (your own income & values) and your 8th house (shared money, investments, inheritance). The sign on each, and any planets there, colour your whole financial story.
Houses 1–4 are mostly about you (self, money, mind, home). Houses 5–8 turn toward others (creativity, work, partners, intimacy). Houses 9–12 reach for the wider world & spirit (travel, career, community, the unseen).
Beyond their numbers, the houses fall into three types that tell you how loudly a planet placed there makes itself felt. The angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) sit on the chart's four corners — the Ascendant, the base, the Descendant and the Midheaven — and they're the strongest: planets here shape your life in active, visible ways. The succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) follow each angle and are about stabilising and building what the angles begin — money, creativity, shared resources, community. The cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) are the most fluid and mental — learning, adjusting, seeking and letting go. The same planet defines you in an angular house but works quietly, behind the scenes, in a cadent one.
Your houses are set by your exact birth time and place — which is why a precise birth time matters so much in astrology. The Ascendant (the sign rising on the eastern horizon the moment you were born) becomes the cusp of your 1st house, and the rest of the wheel unfolds counterclockwise from there. Two people born the same day but a few hours apart can have the same planets in completely different houses — and live them very differently. Most charts have several houses with no planets in them — and that is completely normal. You only have ten “planets” (counting the Sun and Moon) to spread across twelve houses, so empty houses are the rule, not a flaw. An empty house simply means that area of life isn't a major focus this lifetime; it tends to run on the quiet energy of the sign on its cusp, without the extra intensity a planet would bring. To understand an empty house, look at the sign on its cusp — and where that sign's ruling planet sits instead. That planet carries the story of the empty house with it.
