The planets in astrology

The planets are the “what” of your chart — the core drives and energies. The sign shows how each one expresses, the house shows where.

The two luminaries & your “Big 3”

The Sun and Moon aren't technically planets, but astrology counts them among the key “planets”. Together with your Rising sign (the Ascendant), they form your famous “Big 3.”

Personal (you) Social (growth) Outer (generations)
The Sun at the centre, planets out to Pluto · faster (inner) planets shape you most personally.

The Sun

Identity · ego · vitality

Your core self and life force — who you're becoming. This is your familiar zodiac sign.

The Moon

Emotions · instinct · inner world

Your feelings, needs and what makes you feel safe — the private you behind the public face.

Mercury

Mind · communication

How you think, speak, learn and process information. (Yes — “Mercury retrograde”.)

Venus

Love · beauty · values

How you love, what you find beautiful, and what you value — including money and pleasure.

Mars

Drive · desire · action

Your energy, ambition, anger and passion — how you go after what you want.

Jupiter

Growth · luck · abundance

Expansion, optimism, opportunity and where life tends to bless and grow you.

Saturn

Discipline · lessons · structure

Your responsibilities, limits and life's hardest, most maturing lessons — the strict but fair teacher.

Uranus

Change · rebellion · awakening

Sudden shifts, innovation and where you break the rules and need freedom. (A “generational” planet.)

Neptune

Dreams · spirituality · illusion

Imagination, intuition, art and escapism — where boundaries dissolve and magic (or confusion) lives.

Pluto

Power · transformation · rebirth

Deep, intense change — death and rebirth, obsession, and the power to completely transform.

Personal vs outer planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars move fast and shape you. Jupiter & Saturn shape your timing and growth. Uranus, Neptune & Pluto move slowly and colour whole generations.

How planets combine

A planet alone is incomplete. You read it as: Planet (what) + Sign (how) + House (where). For example, “Venus in Leo in the 5th house” = how you love (Venus), expressed boldly and dramatically (Leo), in the area of romance and creativity (5th house). See the 12 houses and put it together in how to read your birth chart.
