What is a nakshatra?

In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each — the lunar mansions. While your rashi (Moon sign) gives the broad strokes of your emotional nature, your nakshatra (birth star) refines it into something far more specific: your instincts, your gifts, your karmic themes. Each nakshatra has its own ruling planet, deity, symbol and animal, and its own unmistakable character.

Don't know yours? Your free Kundli reveals your Moon nakshatra (and its pada) in seconds — then come back and read what it means. 🐑

Nakshatras and personality

The 27 nakshatras are grouped into three sets of nine, each ruled by a planet in the Vimshottari dashas system. Your nakshatra reveals things your rashi can't: your instinctive reactions, your karmic themes, the nature of your ambitions and your shadow. Two people with the same Sun or Moon sign can have completely different nakshatras — which is why two Scorpios born a few days apart can feel so unlike each other.

Each nakshatra also has an animal symbol and a tree associated with it, and is divided into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′ each — the pada you were born in adds a further layer of nuance, coloured by one of the four signs of a fixed square.

The three qualities (gunas)

Every nakshatra carries one of three qualities: Deva (divine, sattvic), Manushya (human, rajasic), or Rakshasa (intense, tamasic). These aren't good or bad — they describe energy and approach. Deva nakshatras tend toward selflessness and harmony; Manushya toward ambition and human drives; Rakshasa toward depth, intensity, and transformation at any cost.

How to use your nakshatra

Once you know your birth nakshatra, you can explore:

Your free Kundli shows all three. Start with your Moon nakshatra — it's the lens through which you experience everything.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a nakshatra and a rashi?

A rashi is your Moon sign — one of 12 signs of 30° each. A nakshatra is a finer division of 13°20°, giving 27 stations. Your nakshatra sits within your rashi and gives much more specific information about your nature.

How do I find my nakshatra?

You need your exact date, time and place of birth. Your free Kundli on Magical Chart calculates it instantly — it shows your Moon nakshatra, pada, and ruling planet.

Are nakshatras used for compatibility?

Yes — Vedic compatibility (Ashtakoot matching) uses nakshatra comparison as its primary method. The 36-point system compares the Moon nakshatras of two people across 8 categories including instinct compatibility, temperament and emotional wellbeing.

What is a nakshatra lord?

Each nakshatra is governed by one of seven classical planets or two lunar nodes (Ketu and Rahu). This planetary lord colours the nakshatra's themes and also determines which Vimshottari dasha period you're in at birth and throughout life.

Can two people with the same Sun sign have different nakshatras?

Absolutely. The Sun moves through roughly 2–3 nakshatras per sign (each sign is 30° wide; nakshatras are 13°20′). So yes — two Scorpios born two weeks apart can have entirely different Moon nakshatras and feel very different.
