What is a nakshatra?

In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each — the lunar mansions. While your rashi (Moon sign) gives the broad strokes of your emotional nature, your nakshatra (birth star) refines it into something far more specific: your instincts, your gifts, your karmic themes. Each nakshatra has its own ruling planet, deity, symbol and animal, and its own unmistakable character.
