Everything moves in cycles.
The Law of Rhythm states that everything in existence moves in cycles — not randomly, but in predictable, measurable rhythms. The tides rise and fall. The seasons advance and retreat. Day and night. Activity and rest. Expansion and contraction. Inhale and exhale. At every scale, from the cellular to the cosmic, reality pulses in rhythm.
The Kybalion states: "Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates." That last phrase — rhythm compensates — is important: the pendulum swings as far one way as it does the other. Every high is balanced by a low; every period of expansion is balanced by contraction.
No state lasts forever. This is the most comforting and the most humbling thing the Law of Rhythm offers. Grief will not persist at its most acute pitch. Joy will not sustain at its most radiant. Success will cycle; struggle will cycle. You are not broken when you are in a low — you are in the natural downswing of a cycle that will inevitably turn upward again.
This works in reverse, too: the Law of Rhythm warns against becoming too attached to the highs. A period of great productivity, romantic intensity, creative flow or financial abundance will inevitably ease — not because something has gone wrong, but because rhythm demands it. Knowing this allows you to enjoy the high without grasping at it, and to endure the low without despairing.
Your energy, focus, mood and creativity move in daily cycles — peaks and troughs across the day that are measurably consistent for most people. Working with your daily rhythm (doing deep work in your peak hours, resting in your troughs) is far more effective than trying to maintain a flat level of output all day.
The body and the psyche respond to the seasons, even in modern environments. Winter calls for rest and inwardness; spring for new beginnings; summer for action and abundance; autumn for harvest and release. Living against these rhythms costs energy; moving with them restores it.
Larger arcs of expansion and contraction show up across years and decades: periods of building, periods of dismantling, periods of uncertainty, periods of integration. A "fallow" period — when nothing seems to grow — is a genuine phase of the cycle, not a failure of the gardener.
Many people find the lunar cycle (new moon to full moon and back) a useful practical rhythm to align with: intentions and beginnings at the new moon, fullness and gratitude at the full, release and reflection in the waning phase. The moon’s rhythm is one of the most visible expressions of the Law of Rhythm available to everyday observation.
"You don’t have to master all twelve at once, love. Live one gently, and the others follow. 🐑"
Everything moves in natural cycles — up and down, active and still, expansion and contraction. No state, high or low, lasts forever. The rhythm is predictable even when the timing isn’t — there will always be a downswing, and a downswing always precedes an upswing.
The lunar cycle is one of the most accessible visible expressions of this law: new moon (beginnings, planting intentions), waxing (building), full moon (fulfilment, gratitude), waning (releasing, resting), dark moon (integration). Many people use the moon’s 29.5-day cycle as a practical framework for working with rhythm.
It means all states cycle — including difficult ones. Yes, highs ease. But lows also turn. The law is neither pessimistic nor optimistic — it’s structural: everything moves, everything cycles, nothing is permanent in either direction.
It means the pendulum swings as far in one direction as it does in the other. Deep grief, over time, opens the capacity for deeper joy. A long period of struggle often precedes a proportionally abundant season. The compensation isn’t guaranteed on your timeline, but the law says it comes.
By changing your relationship to rest and withdrawal. A low cycle isn’t a failure — it’s a natural phase. Treat it as winter: a season for integration, restoration and patience, not for pushing or producing. The more you genuinely rest in the low, the more fully you come into the high.
